The Gladesville Community Loses
an Important Piece of History
The mighty oak around and in which many area school children played was felled by a wind storm
on Jan. 12 or Jan. 13 (Friday). Damage to the park and a neighbor’s fence was minor, but the loss of the tree is significant. Some early research suggests it stood at the dawn of the Civil War and may have provided
shade for the area residents who gathered for a meeting to discuss the news of war.
Anyone with stories about playing in the tree, old photographs, or information that the GCA can
use about this important landmark should contact us. We are eager to learn more.
Although plans are as yet incomplete, we do hope to find
a way to salvage some part of this landmark. Look for more information in our upcoming publication on Gladesville’s
history.
